Healthy Festive Tips….

With lots of parties with family & friends in the next couple of weeks….we ALL overindulged this time of year. Trying to keep some BALANCE is the key.

  • Firstly…be kind to yourself…& those around you. It’s good for your mind & soul.
  • Yes…you probably will indulge, but try to eat/drink the healthy stuff as much as possible. Enjoy plenty of healthy salads & veggies to go with festive foods.
  • Water…it IS your friend. Especially up here…drink it up!!!
  • Get out & about…go for a walk early morning to beat the heat, or at night to check out the Christmas lights.
  • Find some time out just for you…it helps you to ground your feelings & settle the mind…it can be an emotional time of year.
  • Smile when you greet people…even when you’re on the phone – they can ‘hear’ your smile!  🙂

Remember….things can be difficult for some this time of year…talk to those around you when needed – look out & support each other. There’s added pressure during the Festive season which some experience…here’s some extra tips to get you through. XO

Anxiety….

Anxiety is something I commonly see in clinic…& it can affect people from from varying levels.

Symptoms of anxiety can be very unsettling. Your heart rate increases, your mind races & you can no longer think straight. Though everyone experiences anxiety a bit differently, there are some more common symptoms to look out for.

Physical sensations:

  •  racing heart;
  • hot flushes, sweating & skin clamminess;
  •  rapid breathing; &/or
  •  frequent gastrointestinal upsets.

Emotional sensations:

  • feelings of excess worry, panic, fear or guilt;
  • obsessive thinking & behaviours; &/or
  •  feeling generally tense and wound up.

Some Lifestyle tips for you to try:

  • Connect with friends – keeping in touch with people maintains your support network;
  •  Exercise (ideally outdoors) – regular exercise has been shown to improve mood & reduce feelings of stress;
  • Choose healthy foods – consume protein at each meal & avoid refined & sugary foods. This can help balance your blood sugar levels, reducing mood imbalances & lessening anxiety;
  • Avoid caffeine – stimulants such as caffeine can exacerbate anxiety; &
  • Breathe! – if you start to feel panicky or anxious, focus on taking some slow, purposeful, deep breaths, helping you return to a state of calm. Meditation can also help to quieten your mind & instill calm. I hope to bring a meditation class to the clinic soon.  🙂

Does Depression or Anxiety affect You or Someone You Love???

The prevalence of low mood, anxiety & depression in our society is scary. I often see men & women with either of these concerns….with each being seen as an individual. 

Breathing Exercises have been shown to shift moods….many psychologists uses these type of techniques. I would like to share with you some techniques which you may be able use yourself or share with loved ones.

Magnesium…great for your Muscles!

You’ve heard me suggest Epsom Salt Baths before…..not only to ease sore muscles, but to chill out in during your weekly “chill ritual”. Magnesium is easily absorbed through the skin & is used by the nervous system to aid relaxation. Add a few drops of your favourite essential oils…..BLISS!
