Seafood…..the choice is yours!!!

Now this is a hot topic….buy your fish locally. Around  the world, people are becoming more aware of limited fish stocks, & are choosing to consider where their food comes from. “Support NT Caught” is an initiative allowing us to know where our fish is caught – so we know they are firstly fresh & caught in ‘clean’ waters you can trust, & secondly are from sustainable fishing practices whilst being environmentally friendly. By buying local we are supporting our local fishing community & economy….all whilst enjoying great tasting fresh fish!!

Now all retail outlets & restaurants in the NT must display whether their fish is locally caught (Australian or NT) or imported. This puts the onus back onto the consumer to ultimately make the informed choice. Avoid buying or catching endangered fish species & those caught by harmful methods, such as long lines (which snare other species). You’re then helping to ensure there is a sustainable supply of fish for now & the future.

We all love fresh fish….but sometimes canned fish is a great convenience. To help you choose tuna that’s ‘dolphin friendly’, sustainable, environmentally friendly whilst supporting local fisheries – go to: http://www.greenpeace.org/australia/en/what-we-do/oceans/Take-action/canned-tuna-guide/

Here you will see that you can now buy sustainable ‘pole&line’ caught tuna in every supermarket. The list ranks the brands on a number of factors – so once again, all onus is on consumers to make a informed choice.

Enjoy your seafood…..responsibly….this festive season.
