Healthy Festive Tips….

With lots of parties with family & friends in the next couple of weeks….we ALL overindulged this time of year. Trying to keep some BALANCE is the key.

  • Firstly…be kind to yourself…& those around you. It’s good for your mind & soul.
  • Yes…you probably will indulge, but try to eat/drink the healthy stuff as much as possible. Enjoy plenty of healthy salads & veggies to go with festive foods.
  • Water…it IS your friend. Especially up here…drink it up!!!
  • Get out & about…go for a walk early morning to beat the heat, or at night to check out the Christmas lights.
  • Find some time out just for you…it helps you to ground your feelings & settle the mind…it can be an emotional time of year.
  • Smile when you greet people…even when you’re on the phone – they can ‘hear’ your smile!  🙂

Remember….things can be difficult for some this time of year…talk to those around you when needed – look out & support each other. There’s added pressure during the Festive season which some experience…here’s some extra tips to get you through. XO

Veggie & Haloumi Fritters

These went down well in our house too…NO MEAT – how did he survive??!!

I served leftovers up for breakie the next day….yum!!

Ingredients:

  • 2 large zucchini, grated then excess water squeezed out
  • 200g Haloumi, grated
  • 5 spring onions, chopped
  • Corn kernels, cut of cob
  • 1 carrot, grated
  • 1/2C mint leaves chopped
  • 1C plain flour (or flour of choice)
  • 1 1/2tsp baking powder
  • Salt & Pepper
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 lemon, finely grated & juice

Serve with:

  • 1 punnet cherry tomatoes, quartered
  • Baby lettuce leaves
  • Basil leaves

Method:

  1. Put zucchini, haloumi, carrot, corn, mint, spring onions, & lemon rind & juice into a large bowl.
  2. Sift in flour & baking powder. Season with salt & pepper.
  3. Crack in the eggs & stir to combine thoroughly.
  4. Heat oil in frying pan. Use 1/4C of mixture per fritter, mould with your hands. Flatten with spatula.
  5. Cook each fritter 3-4mins each side, or until golden & cooked through.
  6. Serve with tomato & greens – hot or cold!!   😉

This was another hit at my Opening Night….everyone started trying the ‘safe’ orange juice (oranges, carrot, ginger, celery)….but ended up actually loving the beetroot juice!

x3 beetroot

x2 pears

x4 kale leaves

2cm knob turmeric

x2 limes

Tangy Peach Granita

Most fruits contain ample natural sugars….so there really isn’t any reason to add sugar. A granita is effectively a sorbet – but without the added sugar. Sugar depletes the function of the immune system for up to five hours after consumption – so reducing your intake will give your body an automatic boost. Peaches are rich in vitamin C & beta-carotene & a great source of fibre.

Ingredients:

  • 4 ripe peaches, skinned, halved, stoned & sliced (or any fruits you like)
  • 2Tbsp lemon or lime juice
  • 200ml water
  • 3 star anise
  • 1 stick cinnamon
  • Fresh strawberries or raspberries to garnish

Method:

  1. Heat the water in the saucepan until almost boiling, then turn off the heat.
  2. Soak the star anise & cinnamon in the water for an hour, then remove & discard the spices.
  3. Blend the peaches in a food processor with 2Tbsp of the water until smooth.
  4. Add lime juice & blend again.
  5. Place in plastic container & freeze until hard (4-5hrs).
  6. Take out of freezer & serve with berries.

Just what the Naturopath ordered in these steamy conditions this long weekend!!!

Watermelon Berry Crush

Ingredients:

  • 500g (3 cups) watermelon, cubed
  • 1 punnet strawberries, stems removed
  • juice of 1 lime
  • 16 ice cubes
  • 2 tbsp mint leaves
  1. Blend everything together in a high speed blender.
  2. Garnish with a lime wedge & a sprig of mint.

Enjoy!!!

8 Basic Lifestyle Changes to a New You!!

So….you do they hard yards for a couple of months – counting calories, over-committing at the gym, starving yourself on lettuce leaves….then “life” gets in the way & you feel defeated??! The key is consistency & also something that is easy to do…so it becomes a way of everyday life.

Try these simple tips:

  • Drink 2-4 litres water daily (depending on exercise & weather).
  • Eat “real whole foods” – avoid processed foods, & ensure you have lean protein sources with each meal.
  • Have 5 serves veggies & 2 serves fruit a day.
  • Don’t eliminate whole macronutrients such as carbohydrates – they aren’t the devil??! When you’re training harder, increase the carbs…..if you don’t train, have less & ensure they are wholegrain, low GI.
  • Increase your fibre to 25-30g per day – aids elimination of waste, provides source of food for gut probiotics.
  • Avoid drinking excess calories – cut soft drinks, coffee/tea with sugar, & limit alcohol. Enjoy a glass of wine if you’re out – just don’t drink the whole bottle!!
  • Commit to an exercise routine you enjoy….if team sports are more your thing then get out there & mix it up on the court with some friends….though if you prefer to do the one-on-one sessions, find a great personal trainer to push you to your limits.
  • Be realistic with your training session…..don’t say you’re going to do 5 sessions a week & feel like a failure if you don’t get there. Do 1 extra session than you normally do & build up from there.

Make it part of your lifestyle…then your health will truly benefit!
