We all subject our hair to some sort of treatment -whether it’s styling with hot hair appliances, colouring, products, salt/chlorine pools & sunlight! This can leave our hair dry, brittle, dull & lifeless. The majority of modern-day products we use on our hair are full of nasty chemicals which contribute to poor hair health….& even our general health. Here’s a few healthy hair tips & kitchen remedies for you to try at home.

Eat your way to healthy hair by adding these to your diet:

  • Dark green leafy vegies – full of calcium, magnesium, iron, folic acid, beta-carotene, with vit A & C aiding our bodies to produce sebum – our natural hair conditioner.
  • Lentils & beans – full of protein to promote hair growth, calcium, magnesium, potassium, folic acid, along with biotin, zinc & iron which strengthens the hair.
  • Wholegrains – calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, manganese, as well as iron, zinc & B vitamins to give you all the nutrients for healthy hair.
  • Carrots – normally thought of for eyes but the vitamin A is great for a healthy scalp.
  • Bananas –  potassium, tryptophan, vitamins C, K & B6 which is help reduce hair thinning & aid the absorption of other nutrients from the foods we eat, & produce red blood cells to keep hair follicles healthy & shiny.
  • Nuts – calcium, magnesium, folic acid, & zinc which slows down hair thinning & hair loss. Walnuts also contain selenium which helps to prevent dandruff.

Kitchen Remedies

  • Mash bananas with some honey to treat dandruff, prevent split ends & promote elasticity. Leave for 15mins & rinse off.
  • Mash avocado & honey to infuse vit E & B along with much needed moisture for dry hair. Leave for 15mins & rinse off.
  • Yoghurt encourages new growth whilst cleansing hair of grease & build up. Wrap your head in cling wrap & leave on for 20mins before rinsing off.
  • Coconut oil is antibacterial, anitfungal whilst being good for your hair & scalp. Warm the oil to room temperature & apply through hair from roots to tips. Leave for 20mins, then rinse out & follow with natural shampoo & conditioner.
  • Apple cider vinegar added to equal parts of water & flat beer. Add a few drops of rosemary essential oil & this will remove product build up from your hair, balance scalp pH & add shine.

Try to buy organic, cruelty free, chemical free products that don’t coat the hair or irritate the scalp, & eat a diet rich in nutrients. Let hair dry naturally wherever possible.
